On the last strains of the song, the camera moves up and away from spinning Sahibjaan and pans in on the background - roofs, other spinning girls, tawaifs of other Kothas.

'le leena dupatta mera'

I have often wondered about this. Majrooh Sultanpuri used the word 'le leena' while the common usage would have it as ' le liya'. Is this Braj?

Choreography for the song was by Lachchu Maharaj. Meena Kumari was ill and in a lot of physical pain while shooting this film (and this film was in shooting for the longest time)  but there are only few scenes in which you can tell.

    I think leena is Braj bhaasha. Will check out and confirm. But great use....the word sticks.

    Dear
    Majrooh , Ali sardar jafri and Majaz were from Awadh . All of them have used this word. Leena is liya as spoken in Awadh. Excellent effort . keep smiling .

    Found one more 'leena' song. This one had lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi: "balama ne har leena kaisa jaadu keena" [video link]from Jeewan Jyoti (1953). Music by S D Burman. Directed by Mahesh Kaul (uncle of Mani Kaul)

    Also according to Encyclopedia - Britannica:
    "Gender agreement is also more marked in Braj Bhasha than in Awadhi; compare Braj Bhasha wako chhora ‘his son’ and waki chhori ‘his daughter’ to Awadhi wake larka ‘his son’ and wake larki ‘his daughter.’"

Kishore Kumar, Yodel-ay-ee-oooo Songs, A List

*Updated with corrections pointed out by Bart Plantenga , author of some incredible book on Yodeling including Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo: The Secret History of Yodeling Around the World. -0- Kishore Kumar 's brother Anoop Kumar, who we basically know for the line ' O manu tera toh hua ab mera kya hoga ', used to own lots of Austrian music records. And from these records, Kishore Kumar picked up the art of Yodel singing, an art perfected in bathroom and then introduced by him to the world of Hindi film music.
